Would you rather that Auschwitz was carpet-bombed? Yes. If they had killed most of the inmates at any one time but managed to destroy the railway yards and the crematoria, it would have saved many lives.

They tried one rescue on a Gulag holding British Airmen. They blew a hole in the wall and bombed the guards quarters. The Brits that escaped were rounded up and shot to death.
