I have some new and practical ideas that Democrats should being running on: 1. Pursue a radically different energy policy that uses existing and emerging energy technologies to double the efficieny of our vehicles within a generation. On the home side, puruse new and far safer pebble bed reactor nuclear energy, install cleaner and more efficient new coal turbines, modernize the electric grid and bring efficiency standards for appliances up to levels already enjoyed in Japan and Europe. 2. Rebuild America. We have public works projects dating back to the WW2 era that have never been built because the military and foreign policy objectives have always taken priority. The American people might welcome a new political message based on using OUR TAXDOLLARS to rebuild and improve our own country for a change. 3. Follow the Constitution and only go to war when a war is declared by Congress. Put the PATRIOT Act under scrutiny by creating a monitoring board and force reauthorization every two years, so if it's being abused, we can junk it. We're supposedly fighting for freedom in other countries, no reason to destroy our basic freedoms here in the process. The Republicans don't seem to have any interest in pursuing any of these practical policies that would improve the lives of average Americans. The Democrats should step up to the plate and once again become the party of progressive thinking and new ideas in American politics. These are ideas that are as American as apple pie and the American people would respond to such a message: "Put American ingenuity to work to solve our energy problems. Rebuild America and make it the 21st Century country it should be. Become the Constitutional Republic that our forefathers envisioned."
