The United States remains the leader in electronic-system design, by China is moving rapidly into the upper echelon of the market.

U.S. electronic-system design is projected to drive 33.5 percent of global semiconductor purchasing this year, amounting to $58.7 billion worth of chip sales, market researcher iSuppli said in a recent report. Japan is expected to be ranked second with 26.1 percent, followed by Taiwan, 9.9 percent; Germany, 5.8 percent; China/Hong Kong, 5.4 percent; and South Korea, 5.3 percent.

China/Hong Kong, however, is on track to pass Germany next year and take the No. 4 slot, iSuppli said.

When combining China/Hong Kong and Taiwan, the three regions collectively are expected to generate as much design activity as Japan, and will likely surpass the island nation next year, the research firm said.

Design of electronic goods leads directly to equipment production, which in turn drives semiconductor sales. In terms of new semiconductor sales, U.S. electronic-system design is expected to drive 40.2 percent of sales this year, with Japan a distant second with 15.5 percent, followed closely by China/Hong Kong at 14.8 percent and Taiwan, 10.1 percent.

The U.S. design industry is being helped this year by strong shipment growth in the markets for industrial and automotive equipment.
