It's actually acutely embarrassing to be in front of a judge you know when you've screwed up. So far my biggest mistakes are one count of "failure to pay full time and attention," and one count of not keeping up to date with the rabies shots for one of my cats. Judges are just so danged judgmental!

Can't imagine how humiliating it must be when you've really screwed the pooch.

I know a few lawyers who've done bad things and lost their licenses, and they never lose that hang-dog look.

The sense of shame is one of the greatest factors that keeps us all to the straight and narrow, not just the fear of God or the fear of going to jail, but the fear of public humiliation.
