The real question irking me is that there's too little political will in Europe to create a space program at least matching NASA's. Wish there were millions of youths like your son who are interested or even take part in space activities. The ESA is far from a system comparable to the Space Shuttle. There are just plans for an unmanned vehicle to be used after 2006:
