It is not ALL conspiracy IMO. Conservatives are so familiar with religious & legal frameworks, that they think science should function the same way. Our legal system is predicated on having two sets of experts, one for each side of every case. These two sets of experts clearly have (at least for the sake of the suit) different views, rather than consensus. So conservatives think naturally enough, that the same approach holds in science. If this group of scientists tell you your approach is bunk, just hire another set that agrees with you. They must be out there somewhere, for the right price?

I find the "intelligent design" front on the culture wars somewhat more offensive that most conservative dogma in lieu of science, but I don't know how widespread the push is on this. On yet another culture war front, this one demonstrably somewhat nearer and dearer to W's heart, we have this:

Focus founder ruffles feathers

Dobson compares stem-cell research to Nazi experiments rockymountainnews.com

And many more articles at news.google.com .

To paraphrase Bilow, Godwin weeps, though somehow I doubt Dobson will be forced to recant in the Senate well.
