My father was in the Navy in the South Pacific. He never really talked about his war experiences. I don't know if they were relatively insignificant (lovely Tahitian girls) or so painful he didn't want to deal with them. He was not injured or anything. He thought men who spent the rest of their lives talking about the war were living in the past, but I think sometimes men like that were so traumatized that was all they could do that was somewhat socially acceptable. It was definitely a life-changing event, and different people responded in different ways.
