energyplay Re: "200 MPH" A 1967 396 ci 375 horsepower Chevelle with a 2.73 rear end would run over 200 mph. It had to be the 375 hp engine because that one had solid lifters so you could rev it as high as you dared without valve float. And I think they sold for around $2500 back then though I never bought a new one; bought a real nice second hand one in 1969 for under $2000. The 375 had 11:1 compression so it wouldn't run at all on this unleaded gas you have now.

There were a whole bunch of those muscle cars that would run 200 but you had to have the steepest ratio rear end and solid lifters. And this with wide oval bias ply tires. Yikes. But with that gearing all they would do is smoke the tires on acceleration so if you wanted to go to the drag strip you needed to change chunks.

Heck, I've got a 1974 absolutely stock motorcycle (Kawasaki Z-1)sitting in my garage now that I've had for over 30 years and it will go over 140. I've had it over 145 by its 160 mph speedo (many long years ago <g>) and I've checked it at 120 by interstate mile markers and at 120 the speedo is dead accurate. I have read original road tests from 1974 where 152 was claimed for a well tuned but stock Z-1.

Oh yeah, with Chrysler there was the 426 hemi and I think you could get that in a Fury or a Road Runner. With the right gearing no telling how fast one of those would go on an interstate straightaway.
