James > Here is what the Zionists really want.

The Zionists can want whatever they want but the chances of them getting it become more remote with each day that passes. IMO, either they are in a position to dictate terms and TAKE what they want, which they are not, or else they will get what they are given -- and this they are not prepared to accept. So the Zionists/Israelis will propose numerous unilateral solutions all of which will eventually disappear into the dustbin.

I say this with the knowledge of my own experience in South Africa where the white establishment also believed it could dictate terms to the blacks forever. But when the crunch came the leadership protected their own asses, they let the foot soldiers take the rap, and the country had to fend for itself as so-called democracy rapidly became the tyranny of the majority. Today, the whites, as a group, have no political power whatsoever in a completely black-run country.

Israel is up against the same problem where, even now, a multinational, unitary state representing Israel and Palestine will have an Arab majority. In time the Arab majority will be even bigger. So, as per the article you posted, the Israelis have to try the Bantustan, ghetto, ethnic cleansing solution in an attempt to preserve an Israeli majority. This did not work in SA or Yugoslavia and will not work for them either.

IMO, the Israelis would be far better advised to bite the bullet and seek a solution which is acceptable to the Palestinians rather than keep deluding themselves that they can dictate the terms forever. And they longer they take to come round to this way of thinking the harder the negotiations will be and the more they will have to give up to achieve a lasting solution.

They should have listened to Rabin instead of killing him -- but that's history now.
