He has a point of view and uses various rhetorical tools to persuade the people who freely listen to him that he's correct.

Indeed, and I imagine that many of his listeners interface with him in just that way.

OTOH, some of his listeners and their cohort don't appear to have a real grasp of his ideas. When they intone mantras in place of argumentation, can't or won't explain their positions, can't or won't parry contrary positions, and get befuddled, defensive, or anxious when faced with them, it manifests more like brainwashing than persuasion/comprehension. I don't know if it's brainwashing or not. That's not the only possible explanation for that dullness and affect. Which is why I continue to be curious and to look for insights.
