This suggests we need a registration system - which is a privacy issue most Americans normally have huge issues with - but for guns they might support such lists.

Why do Americans have issues with registering guns? We register cars without a problem. I know that the gun lobby probably opposes it, because they oppose any legislation in that direction, but do most Americans really think gun owners should not register their weapons? I really don't know.

It makes sense to me that guns should be registered, and also that owners should be licensed and have to take periodic (every three years or something) ownership classes.
