When ever you have any comparitive questions on tech, I highly recommend Tom's Hardware Guide. tomshardware.com Athons will usually always give more CPU bang for the buck. However, I am an Intel bigot, but I use Intel CPU's usually three plus years after release. My last CPU up was a 2.5gig P4 at $100 And I seem to always use obsolete motherboards being sold at scrap prices. My EE kid bought a $600 athlon laptop that is very nice.

Dunno about chips. I've lost interest in sorting all that out. Now I just buy a top of the line Dell, wait three or four years, then buy another. I was looking at their offerings recently and noticed they have an XP Media Center Edition in their high end laptops.
