We bought my mother a Dell for Christmas, and it was easy for her to set up and use. But they threw in a Dell printer for "free" and now she needs toner/ink. They claim that you can only buy it from Dell.

I told her to check Office Depot to see if they sell a generic.

I read that Jervis story and I feel for the guy. But I've had nothing but Dells and I've found their service excellent. They've replaced half this computer over the four years I've had it, or so it seems, which could be considered a bad thing or a good thing. At least they replace stuff quickly and without question. You definitely want to buy their extended service contract. And if you buy a notebook, get an extra power cord.

I'm going to send you a copy of the Mossberg article in a private posting if I can figure out how to do it. Since the WSJ requires payment for the use of their interactive section, best I don't put it up here in public.

I would never have thought of this route had I not read this. Mossberg is about the best. I don't know how many gadgets I've bought on his recommendation.

Oh, one more thing. About Best Buy. We've had reasonably good experience there. Bought a laptop, a digital camera, an Ipod. All worked well. Had knowledgable sales clerks which was a joy. And they have a decent return policy.
