Taro, do you know why this is?

My friends say it's because the socialist state is so strong, it has essentially replaced the family unit. I was surprised the figure is more than half.

That's not true. Families are as strong in Europe as they are here......maybe stronger. Europeans tend not to live as far from their families as we do.

In addition, Europeans don't always marry when they first get pregnant.......esp. Scandinavians. Think less conservative than Americans.

Its a taxation and public services problem.
As long as the government bottom line deal is better for a family with kids and both (non married) parents working, that is what happens.
We have friends in Stockholm, he Swedish and she Japanese, who have been living together happily divorced now for almost 20 years.
They got married when she expected their son but divorced again less than 10 years later...

Another couple we know just got married after 30 years together. Their grown up daughter at 23 participated in the celebrations...
