Well a visualization of the typical would suggest that holding a light higher would eliminate shadows cast up obscuring a head above something that would because of gravity rest on the floor. It seems to me if a person were thinking and looking for a place to hide, they would get behind something that extended up from the floor as a first choice. In a situation of exploring a darkened area with gun draw, the idea of using a flashlight as a club is a flight of someone's imagination.

I'm not sure hitting down with the face of the flashlight would be much more of a weapon that your fist alone, pinkie first, or dropping the flashlight, straightening our hand, and making it a karate chop. At first it might seem like that, but you need to re-visualize it. When a cop holds the flashlight above his head, he holds it with the flash end coming out from his little fingers, not the from this thumb and forefinger. His hand is right behind the flash. If he strikes down from that position, his hand reverses and the butt end of the flash is now in front. So he hits with the butt.
