What gets me is the SIZE of these new homes. 2600 to 4000 square feet? They must spend their entire weekends cleaning them.

Precisely our thought over breakfast. But then neither one of us dusts. AAcchoo.

In my experience, it's easier to keep a larger home clean, all things being equal. You have plenty of space to put things away and no clutter. Dusting and vacuuming don't really take much time if you don't have a lot of clutter to work around so what extra effort it takes to clean more square footage is more than compensated for by not having to deal with the clutter.

If you count the garage, our house is about 4,000 sq. ft., built in 1979, and it actually looks very 70's (brown shag rug in the rec room) but the big new houses they build around here are more like 6,000 to 8,000. If you visit people who live in them, they remind me of something out of a Walter Scott novel. I expect to see pigs roasting in the fireplaces.

Especially in McLean, where all the AOL executives live. Those seem like they're around 20,000 sq. ft., but I guess they have live-in servants.

The odd things is newlyweds living in these monstrosities. I bet if you look in the windows, they don't have any furniture in some of the rooms.
