"With countries, it doesn't work that way."

Which is why it is often a good idea to not leave sticks lying around so others can beat you with them. For example, if it proves out that the Bush Administration really lied and cooked the books about Saddam, which seems likely, then there is a stick we've left that the Arab world can use at will to beat us with. It doesn't really matter if the Iraqis are better off without Saddam and his brood. And Abu Ghraib doesn't help.

The Japanese behaved badly in those countries they occupied prior to and during WWII. We, however, behaved a lot better in the aftermath of WWII. Not perfectly mind you, but well enough that only fringe groups are going to hold our bases and our occupation against us. Regardless of how things play out, Israel has also left a stick lying around with respect to the Palestinians. Likewise the Sunnis inside of Iraq. They might have managed to live things down, but that week when they were targeting kids is something the Shia in Iraq are going to remember for a long, long time.
