On the "us/them" formula, it's the best sort of quick and dirty formula I have for what bothers me the most about the present political culture. It encompasses the demonization of the other; the obvious resort to ad hominem arguments (well, "resort" is not quite the right word, more something like almost complete dependence on); etc.

I still think it's possible to talk, in an agreeable fashion, about even fundamental disagreements. And a democratic political culture, obviously, depends on that hope. When we give up on that, it becomes simply power. And low level civil conflict. At best.
