Bush is the President, he has the bully pulpit, he gets news whenever he chooses to make it. He could stand up today and say that we should all inflate our tires, bundle our errands, carpool, ride bikes and walk when possible.

He is also an oil man, from an oil family and all his friends are BigOil and BigBiz. He doesn't have the ability to see through that thick fog of black cough-cough smoke and he certainly doesn't have the desire.

If the country elects oil men into office, they're going to get policies geared to rewarding...oil men. In order to stop these wrong-headed and hugely impractical policies, we're going to have to get rid of the oil men.

I think it's good to have prices that are creeping up since it does look like we have a peak oil situation. It's easier to make small adjustments over a long period of time than be stuck with most of the population living in car-happy suburbia when $10/gal gas hits the pumps.

What is the difference between having a Minivan and car seats and an SUV with car seats? The Minivan or station wagon is a better car for children since they meet higher standards for safety.

The SUV is a status symbol, the bigger and blacker and more tinted its windows are, the higher the status...and heck, does ANYONE need a Hummer 1,2 or 3 for goodness sakes? Cars, like shoes, are status symbols first and foremost. Everyone can get along fine with basic transportation and a single pair of sneaks but noooooooooooooo it wouldn't be as much fun.

I've also heard that people are taking their houses with them when they vacation, in RVs with baths and showers and nice bedrooms. They get, what, 2 MPG on a downward slope?

Heck, we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil AND solve a big chunk of the healthcare crisis by encouraging the use of scooters, bikes and...OMG...our feet.
