John, pardon me for interrupting in this conversation you are having with CB, but there is a basic misunderstanding here. Pipes doesn't question the "values" of academics. If he did that, and a great many people do, that would certainly be well within the framework of the kinds of arguments we all have.

Pipes considers serious criticism of present American foreign policy to be traitorous. Period. And he is trying to so label academics who do that. It's quite simple.

To repeat something I put in another post. A vibrant democracy depends on these sorts of criticisms.
