I don't really see anything to get worked up over, depending on how he said it. Don't like the message? Get another doctor. Some people as so far in denial about their health that it takes someone like that to get their attention and wake them up to the reality of their condition. My brother-in-law fits that description. He's probably 200 pounds overweight and despite contracting diabetes and suffering two heart attacks nothing changed in his life until his new doctor spoke bluntly and in some detail about his appearance, his failure to take responsibility for his actions, as well as his probable lifespan and loss of limbs. It got his attention and has literally changed his life for the better. I haven't seen him this relaxed and happy in almost 20 years.

The rest of what he said was gratuitously tasteless.

I would guess he was trying to shock her into losing weight. I suspect he was tired of nicely telling people to lose weight and not having it have any effect.

He picked the wrong patient this time. But this "sue them" attitude sure gets to me.

Ever heard about the mule and the 2" x 4"?

Tasteless isn't illegal, last time I checked.

My husband is friends with a woman who just came down with an autoimmune disease. When her doctor told her, she started screaming at him for telling her. I asked her why she screamed at her doctor, and she acted surprised that I would even ask. Of course she should scream at her doctor if he tells her something she doesn't like hearing.

People react to bad news in different ways.

Killing the messenger is one of those time-honored ways.

I gotta agree with CB. Yeah, she knows she's obese. Does she fully understand the health and social consequences of that? I doubt it. I don't think she wants to- -even now. It's easier to kill the messenger.

When my cardiologist, 6 years ago, told me that not only did I have cardiac artery disease, but another heart disease that had just then been discovered by a test he ordered and the two in combination were extremely dangerous, should I have screamed and yelled at him and demanded he lose his license? Or should I have listened to his recommendations for changes in lifestyle and implement them?

What would you have done?

I listened and took notes. The last series of tests, completed a few weeks ago, were the best ever. And the second condition that was discovered no longer exists, thanks to taking notes, following instructions, and a lot of dietary sacrifice and hard work.

Maybe that woman should have taken the same approach. She might not end up a sick, bitter old hag if she did.

Tasteless perhaps, but I'm not sure it was gratuitous. He's trying to get her to change unhealthy behavior even if he wasn't tactful, and perhaps even tasteless.

In any case it doesn't deserve a lawsuit or IM even the filing of the complaint with the medical board. Unless there is more to the story, she should have just found another doctor.
