For what it's worth, I have a relation in the US who is well-connected and he sent me the results of a research poll done on behalf of the Democratic Party prior to the last election. Then, it was already clear to me that local issues would not be the decider in the election. The confounding variable was religion and IMO this will be even more so in the forthcoming election. I could never have believed that a progressive nation such as the US could have become so fundamentalist but, in fact, that is what has happened. The US must now, to a considerable extent, be viewed as living once again in the Dark Ages where all thinking is dominated by religion. In the circumstances, the various wars, Iraq for example, have assumed a Biblical significance similar to the Crusades. The strength of the Republican Party is that is understands and caters to the religious mood of Middle America. To these people their interpretation of the Bible is of much greater significance than the American Constitution and Bill of Rights and if they could have their way they would impose a government based on fundamentalist Christian/Zionist principles which is even more extreme than any fundamentalist Muslim government which we have seen eg the Taliban or the Ayatollahs in Iran. In such circumstances, the Democratic Party isn't even a "starter" in any contest. As America becomes more fundamentalist and more fascist the Democrats will increasingly become irrelevant and will eventually be consigned to the dustbin of history.
