India does have a large population of immigrants, especially from neighboring countries. Many of these immigrants entered illegally, and then at some point of time was granted residency. These people do own properties and businesses. People usually immigrate, legally or illegaly, because they believe they will have a better chance of having a higher standard of living or to avoid some kind of prosecution. Immigrants to India are usually from the poorer countries like Bangladesh, looking for a better living condition in India or the ones escaping religious prosecutions.

By some estimates there are over "50 million" illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. drishtikona.com

Just like in the US, illegal immigration is a hot topic in politics in India right now.

>Arun Re: "Millions of immigrants...when they come to USA" Thanks, Arun for making my point. Millions of immigrants DO come here, do "millions" go to India?>

Slagle,

You are very eurocentric. Don't "brown" immigrants count? Just to give you some perspective:

- Huge number of Bangaldeshi immigrants. Tens of Millions. The whole of northeast of India is being affected.

- Half of Tibet. Guess where Dalai Lama and his followers ended up - in India.

- Tamils from Sri Lanka.

- Indian Chinese

- Nepalese (Gurkhas in Bengal)

- Hindu refugees from Kashmir

And if we go back in History, you will find that India accomodated immigrants from all over Asia, followed by Europe (Portugese, French, and British).

>How many millions of Englishmen remain there from your hundreds of years in the British Empire?>

20 million. They are the Indian Upper middle class. :-)

Your East Indian friend from the 1960s was probably one of them.

Slagle,

Are you saying that people are migrating to the US because of "culture"? It is mainly for economic opportunities. More Indians work in the middle east than in USA. The percentage of foreigners working in the middle eastern countries is very high. Does that speak highly of their "culture"?

Water does not naturally flow against gravity. Similarly workforce migrations flow from the weaker economies to stronger. In India, "immigrants" from small villages are lost in big cities like Mumbai and Delhi which are the "melting pot" similar to United States is to immigrants from other countries.

You have to stop defining all migration as only migration across "national" boundaries. When my parents moved from the North of India to the South (Chennai) in the 1970s, we faced more of a culture and language shock then when I moved to the United States.

>I am speaking of true immigration, where large numbers of people without wealth just come there with their families and just fall into the workforce, working side by side with the native people in the factories and farms.>
