just drive around foster city on the weekend, youll see all those guys waving signs for deals on standard rentals, or drive up in the hills of san mateo where all the indivual owned homes are and you'll see a "for rent" sign on almost every other block. The more north you go, the more rentals. San Bruno is full of rentals also.

Maybe because this area was mostly software, I don't know. You can rent for about what property taxes are on a house if you bought today (most of these houses were bought years ago and pay little in taxes though).

I know a fair amount about the rental situation because I am always trying to find places to live for my employees, used to be a huge problem a few years ago but now my advice to everyone is sell your home if you have one and rent, or don't buy and rent. Craigs list is also full of available rentals.
