TH...Detroit saw a really bad time for the auto industry and for real estate in the 1970s....when Americans figured out Detroit was selling a bunch of junk and the Japanese were coming on strong.

(I should know...I bought one that literally exploded at 3,000 miles and got a long-running runaround from the factory and the dealership that repaired it with a bunch of crappy parts. It was a lemon ever after that and cost me a fortune until I dumped it.)

Detroit recovered. Wouldn't surprise me if GM and Ford find another way out of their mess sometime in the future. I'm not putting any money on that bet, though.
