re: ...to get an application to put the files they create...

Judi,

If you know of a small download'able freeware program that does:

"the applications just made new one where they wanted them."

Then I and others will have an example to test out ideas.

If a program creates files and needs access to them, then it can use
a full pathname to them like C:\... or locate them using a searchlist.

Its possible to create a program that can be placed in one location
and then run in another location that will collect output files to be
accessed by the program as it is run. I'm on Windows XP and the default
location to deposit the program files is "Program Files" and another called
"Documents and Settings" that is anothe place used, but I have already
loaded my AOL not in "Program Files" but another folder I created,
and it runs o.k.

This would be one way for you to semi accomplish what you want,
to load programs not off C:\ but into them partitions.

To accomplish placing a program into for example
H:\StarWars
and have its output file be created in
I:\StarWarsOutFiles
would need that program to accept a "working directory/folder"
(a.k.a.) right mouse click program icon
Properties:Shortcut:Target: [H:\StarWars\WARS.EXE]
Properties:Shortcut:Start in: [I:\StarWarsOutFiles]

If you already have partitions made, try doing another install
of that program in a partition rather than the C:\ root.

For sure I may have babbled too much if:

"I moved some and the applications just made new one where they wanted them."

You already tried installing the program on a partition and they
make files under C:\.
