I'm especially puzzled by the sign that says "Enlist Here to Die for Halliburton". In fact, I'm puzzled by any US citizen who beats the "we did it for oil" drum, or talks about secret gas pipelines across Afghanistan or that Bush and Cheney are just shills for Halliburton? Is going to war over oil news or something? Not from my point of view. Not looking at our history. Not looking at the realities of the world and how and why we enjoy the standard of living we have here.

The US has approximately 5% of the worlds population yet consumes 25% of the oil that is produced worldwide. And, this huge American economic engine is running a trade deficit worldwide. The US is the largest producer and the largest consumer in the world. We produce a lot but more than anything else we live large here.

We aren't in Iraq because of Halliburton. We're there because we here in America voted for it. We voted for it partly by using our little plastic voting cards, the ones that we insert into the neighborhood voting booth to say "gimmee more oil, gimmee more oil". I don't know about you but I drive an SUV and I don't carpool to work and I usually vote two or three times a month. Look around, my habits aren't unusual here in the land of the free.

This summer I made a couple of trips out to Wyoming and back to Southern California. We truly live in the land of the free. I saw mile after mile of nice paved freeway. I saw thousands of vehicles, everything ranging from huge pickups hauling huge recreational trailers to SUVs and vans and everything else you could imagine along with commercial trucks hauling goods all over the place. So many of those goods made from petroleum products. We do live large here.

For many decades the US has enjoyed some of the lowest oil/gas prices in the world. Not only have we had the largest single consumer base in the world, with commensurate economies of scale, but our government has worked, above and beneath the table, to ensure a steady flow of oil and at reasonable prices.

Anyone with at least a small knowledge of US history knows these things to be true.

Yes, we went into Iraq because of oil. We have a long history with regards to oil and this is not news. No, we didn't go there on behalf of Halliburton. Halliburton is small potatoes in the wider view. The plain and simple truth is that, aside from the noble reasons oft bandied about, we're there on behalf of the largest consumer group on the planet and the folks holding those signs are a part of that group.
