You are not the only one unhappy with the President on this issue. Even the right wing talk shows here in Dallas defect from their usual 'defend the administration at all costs' stance on this one. Recently there has been a spate of stories about the border towns and the lack of enforcement and the truly awful things that are happening to the legal residents of these towns because of the inundation of illegals. The problem with not taking charge of it for so long is that the negativity increases toward a people, toward Mexicans-- AND finally toward the administration. The average Texan is tired of supporting the schools, the health care system, the welfare system when the result is a lowering of quality for them, the taxpayers, the legal residents. What I hear more and more of is that we need to enforce the borders FIRST. What good is the rest when people keep pouring in only to be absorbed and supported. Is this just another tentacle of the "I don't care as long as it doesn't affect me too much" octopus? Like oil prices? The political plan seems to be, keep personal pain away from your constituents as much as possible and get re-elected....

You hear the big business side of it, cheap labor, whenever Fred Barnes talks about illegal immigration on FOX. He brushes the issue off, contemptuously. The republican strategists read demographics, too, and think the future of the party is with the Hispanics. That's been their uniform attitude for at least the last decade. I figure they all go the same long-term strategy seminars. Pat Buchanan keeps hammering on it. I'll vote for him if he runs again, because of his stance on illegal immigration. It would be a protest vote, but people like me have no place to go at the present moment. see link below. What Bush's stance means is he is beholding to big business, and not the mass of people who elected him. No surprise, I suppose. There are a lot of Republicans who don't like the Bushies. They keep their mouths shut because he's won for them. So far. National ID smart cards would work, to some extent. The employment has to be cut off. It doesn't speak to day labor however, which is a lot of it. Dollars under the table. I would think you'd have to combine border enforcement with smart ID cards. The ID cards won't kill employment, however, because so much takes place in the underground economy. The State of Guanajuato, in Southern Mexico, has gone through an amazing economic Renaissance in the last 20 years. Want to know why? They have the greatest number of citizens in America sending money home. The moral argument has to be framed in a new way, as the conservative think tanks are doing with Design vs. Darwanism. Otherwise they call you a racist; there's also always my personal fave, too: "Well, we're all immigrants here, aren't we." BTW, our new Latino LA mayor just mentioned raising city taxes. If he is in the least successful, the Demos will make him into a poster boy for the party, to gather Latino votes. What nobody says is that illegals have been streaming into this country unimpeded for more than 3 decades. If the Repub. manage to dodge the immigration bullet this time, it'll be because Hillary is running, and that'll hold the party together. If so, I predict disaster in the subsequent cycles, if the illegal problem isn't dealt with. The elites are tone deaf. You can see why in the article you posted, where big business is withholding contributions to pressure the Repub. to keep the floodgates open. They're talking about IT workers, but it extends to illegals, too. Business wants them. Gold has a brighter glow than the general electorate for the Repub. right now. Until the next poll results come in. Calif. schools are wrecked, social services overwhelmed, and there's not an emergency room I could get into without a long wait. I was suckered into believing Regan's Amnesty was a cure for the problem, and that was 20 years ago. Fool me once, etc. And my taxes pay for it. No wonder big business loves it.
