why can't they fix the levy right now with a huge temporary blockade. Last I heard they were using sandbags, that won't work. But a huge cement structure of some sort should be possible. I'm not hearing anything, its like they just gave up

FEMA guy, good-looking and smooth talking, dazzling reporters with talk of refugess taking a cruise???

Meanwhile the gritty reality in NO, which we can remotely observe seems to be far from his thoughts. No immediate useful ideas from this person.

I imagine every working National Guard helicopter is in Iraq. I posted an article on the War in Iraq thread about how the Marines are dragging Vietnam era helicopters out of the desert mothballing and refurbishing them to make up for THEIR helicopter shortage in Iraq. Iraq duty is very hard on equipment. Sandstorms aren't good for bearings.

Dropping things from planes in an urban area is dangerous. The real issue is why there is no plan in the first place to evacuate people without cars from such a big urban concentration.... Actually what I have been thinking is it makes all the chaos that happened in Baghdad after the American conquest not look so bad, because they can't do any better back in the US either.
