Hate Won’t Feed A Hungy Hurricane Victim

-- Lorie Byrd

I have been overwhelmed tonight. Yes, I said “overwhelmed,” the word of choice lately to decribe what city, state and federal agencies have been by Hurricane Katrina.

What has overwhelmed me, even more so than the degree of human physical suffering as a result of Katrina, has been a spiritual suffering that has reached the very souls of some.

I first assumed many just wanted to score political points. I have now come to the conclusion, however, that it goes far beyond that. What I have seen, as I wrote here earlier, is not mere political posturing and finger-pointing, or even crass opportunism – it is pure hatred. I do not use that word lightly, but I can’t find any other way to explain the motivation behind the words that I have heard from some.

Not only have we seen this disaster bring out the worst in some in the looting and other criminal behavior of those in New Orleans, we are seeing the worst on display from some who put the highest priority not on using their voices to garner support for those who are suffering, but to strike a blow at the object of their vile hatred, President Bush. I don’t believe it is possible for a person to carry such hatred for long without it overwhelming them and destroying their spirit. I hope, and pray, that some of those expending such an enormous amount of energy on hatred aimed at their political opponents will redirect that energy in a positive way to help the people suffering horribly on the Gulf Coast.

UPDATE: Hugh Hewitt thinks many on the left are experiencing their Wellstone funeral moment. He is keeping priorities straight and focusing on the relief effort now, but mentions that the heroism on display in the rescue effort is being discounted. He is right and the MSM is to blame. Hugh has some additional observations well worth checking out.
