Take a look at this map and you will see why Duluth, Mn used to be the preferred port. Right at the grain fields. Straight shot though the lakes to the atlantic

Problem with Duluth may be ships to transport grain out of that port.

Great Lakes freighters are not the same as the freighters that sail the oceans.

I'm not sure what the status is with the Great Lakes bulk carriers and whether ocean going ships would be able to fill in.
