Is there someone in the family who might have a copy of her birth certificate? If there's someone in the family in to genealogy, they often have archives of these kinds of papers. It's a long shot, but it might work. One of our life insurers took a copy of a birth certificate- you might suggest that she think back and try to remember if she has sent one to anyone who might have it in their archives. It's somewhere to start (and if it were a company outside of La they could probably help her ASAP).

OK, for money. Seems to me that she can call her bank, explain the situation, and ask them how to get money. They want the SS, and other identifying information, whatever you gave them when you set up the account (mother's maiden name, etc.) I may be spoiled, use a big regional bank, not a little local one. If she uses regional or national bank, try this.

Western Union? I am trying to get information on the phone but am not able to get through to a real human being. They can send her a money order, maybe with a special ID question only she knows?

For ID. Did not know you needed an ID for the bus! She must have a Lousiana driver's license. Go to Louisiana DMV in Franklin, get a duplicate. They may not be open until Tuesday! But does she have NOTHING? They may not be very helpful.

Doing this on Labor Day weekend is going to be an uphill battle.

Edit: tried to call a local Western Union office just for information, they all closed five minutes ago! But I think you can send money through Western Union by using a code.

Edit again: I can access my bank 24 hours. Especially the VISA hotline. She should cancel her credit cards, just in case!

Oooo, ooo, I might one good idea! Her brother can open up a joint bank account with her name on it as well as his? If his bank knows him well they may be helpful.

Here is a link to Greyhound. It doesn't look to me like she needs an ID to take the bus, but the system appears to be overwhelmed.

Tell her to call Pat Robertson. His group is listed by FEMA as providing emergency aid, soliciting donations. I know, I know, but let's see whether he's going to actually spend that money on Katrina victims or not. I think Franklin has a lot of Protestants.
