"My hunch was that the vast natural resource wealth is probably concentrated in the hands of the few as opposed to distributed amongst the population"

Bingo. Not only is the wealth concentrated in a few hands, so is the political power. Huey P. Long, who is revered by some in Louisiana to this day, tried to change that, but got shot first. Yes, I realize that The Kingfish had many negative characteristics(over and above being crooked. But, as a politician that pretty much is a given), but I think he genuinely cared for his people.

Is that concentration of wealth to a lesser extent true of other southern states and Texas as well? If so, isn't that the concept Bush has been trying to sell to the nation as a whole or rather implement on a nationwide basis?
