Even in cases where Justices have preferred outcome, they have to allow enough evidence to be presented to justify their position. I agree with your opinion. The purpose of delay appears to be give time to invent new criticisms of John Roberts. BTW - Do you think Hillary would dare vote against Roberts? IMHO she needs a lot better reason than any advanced yet to seem even close to mainstream.
