I took economics in college like most people did, George. I have a basic understanding. What economic literature are you talking about? I'm not sure I understand what your post is saying, so you might want to use different words and try to explain it to me again. There are all sorts of theories of economics, incidentally. Economics does not govern everything that happens on the face of the earth. While there are things like supply and demand that operate in a free marketplace, that does not mean that society benefits from a free marketplace absolutely. Men are also spiritual beings, and the last time I looked all major religions advocated compassion for the sick, aid for the poor, and generally caring for those around you. For people who are ACTUALLY spiritual, there is no excuse for human suffering when it can be easily alleviated. The prosperity of the modern first world not only allows for policies like universal health care, prenatal nutrition, excellent public education and other social programs, but also benefits from this philosophy with stronger, more stable societies. I think Jesus had it about right: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God"
