MTBE was slightly less expensive than Ethanol. Now that Bush signed the law prohibiting the use of MTBE they have no choice but to use Ethanol.

When Tetra Ethyl Lead was phased out, Chevron for saw the problems with MTBE and lobbied to use Ethanol instead, Exxon pushed for MTBE.

The major problem with MTBE is that it is water soluble, just like Ethanol. Unlike Ethanol it is poisonous, virtually non-biodegradable, and can be tasted and smelled in microscopic quantities in water making the underground water unusable.

When gasoline is spilled anywhere, it evaporates, but the MTBE dissolves in water and finds its way into the water table. The clean-up is going to cost billions of dollars.

The use of MTBE rather than Ethanol in order to save less than a penny per gallon of gas was flat out idiotic.
