You usually are more precise with your use of language.

Well, it was 3 am.

POlitically correct is a shorthand, I agree. I don't believe it is limited to sneering, but I have no urge to argue with you about it.

When you begin to allow cultures to carry out customs that are legal in nature, especially religious ones that could be in direct opposition to the secular law and constitutional rights of individuals, you will sooner or later have the conflict. Where do you draw the line? I know they say that people have recourse to the courts, but often the culture itself would prevent that option.

I think in the current climate we ignore the hard truths and possibilities in our desire to be inclusive and accommodating.

(Note how carefully I avoided saying PC!)

"Politically correct" is a sneer, invented by good old boys who are pissed that they can't call blacks "jigaboos" and working women "gals" anymore.

Politically Correct was a self invented phrase by the political left, who first enforced its authoritarian strictures on their own crowd. As with any other such movement they like to justify their intolerance of contrary opinion, and insulting their targets is certainly one technique they use. One of the great ironies is that PC flourishes in the academic world, prosecuting 'criminals' who violate the PC moral code of permitted speech or permitted ideas. It's Orwell all right, and Big Brother is enforcing the PC code when he can.
