"I think they might be starting to realize that competence trumps ideology."

One can only hope. But that would be such a change from the way things are done, that I am dubious. If for no other reason, it would require an admission that they were wrong and I don't think they can do that seriously.

I am inclined to believe this is the same as their disdain for science. They've successfully dragged science down to a matter of opinion, with opinions of people who don't have any background as equal to those who are experts in the field in question. So it is with experts, all they have is opinions and their 2nd cousin 4th removed has opinions too.

re: I suppose it would be pure partisanship to expect important posts to be held by competent people.

I don't know... as Ted pointed out, the right seems to be very quiet these days (with the exception of the real nuts). I think they might be starting to realize that competence trumps ideology. I hope the voters get that and I suspect they do.

I am not sure about the right getting it but I think the rest of America is. I wonder right now how the American public would answer this question: If you had to make a choice, whom would you choose........a president who lies about adultery but is competent, or a president who preaches the word of God but is incompetent and duplicitous at almost every turn? I think it might be an interesting tell into the current mindset of Americans.

BTW I think its too bad the question has to be asked in the first place in order to find out.
