Sure, that may be an option...

but would they truly believe the US would risk a nuke shoot out with PRC to save their sorry ass in a critical situation?

Don't we all know that PRC strives for hegemony in Asia and sees Japan as a major bump on their road to that?

The Japanese sure know that and would most likely prefer hedging their own bets in case the US troops would be gone and thus no longer exposed to the same potential fate as Japan.
