To this engineer and my children who are also engineers, your anonymous assertions "Bridges and infrastructure are deteriorating faster than we're fixing them" seems an indication of ignorance or delusions.

But for so many the sky is always falling down.

Let's face it, infrastructure isn't sexy and it garners few votes.

A note from the gulfsails blog which underscores the fact that what NO gives to the nation is not measurable in an accountant's tidy pro and con list but has to do with a way of life which will be sadly lost if bean counters prevail. If you want the US from NYC to SF be a huge bland and automated Cleveland where the music and food are designed by Muzak and franchises, be my guest.

It is not serendipity that huge talents have come out of such a small place, Armstrong, the Marsalis family, the DeGeneres, the Gustes, the Goochs, Nevilles, I could go on and on and not do justice to the list. Oh, and there is the history and the architecture.

Bush was right: an America without NO is unimaginable.

Anyway, enjoy:

New Orleans Is NOT Dead, We Only Play That On TV!

Seriously. All New Orleanians in Exile and still here at home need to steel their heart. We're going through an awful dark time, but come on... did we give up when we heard the Hell's Angels were coming to town to crash Mardi Gras? No.

Did we give up when Ronnie Virgets made the transition from paper to tv and we all got a good look at him? No.

Did we give up on our NFL team that has only won one playoff game in its 38 year history? No.

Did we give up when Buddy D got those new dentures and we had to re-learn how to understand him all over again? No.

Did we give up in 1987 when we stopped off in that rest station in Texas to piss and someone had written on the wall that "Louisiana Sucks"? No.

Did we give up when we heard that Uglesich's was closing? No.

Did we give up when the Duck Lady passed away? No.

And half of y'all want to give up now? Where's your balls? Where's your shoot the bird at the devil while drinking a Huge Ass Beer attitude?

The spotlight is on us, and all of our dirty laundry is out in the open. I think it's time to shoot the bird at Katrina, drink a huge ass beer and get down to rebuilding this damn town so we can all get drunk this Mardi Gras and have cops, firefighters, helicopter pilots, nurses, doctors, Texans, NYPD, those guys from Oklahoma handing out MRE's on David Dr., that little old lady up in Idaho who says a prayer for us every night, and everyone else who has helped in any way large or small throw cheap ass plastic beads from floats to us on St. Charles Ave.

The logic is uncharacteristically absent in your various posts.

By your lights, any city which faces a calamity which can reasonably be expected to recur should not be rebuilt.

If SF suffers a huge earthquake, as it inevitably will, it is illogical to rebuild on any of the faults because another is a certainty. Forget the history, the charm, the beauty of the place.

If NYC is again hit by terrorists, which is probable, the damage caused should not be fixed because we would simply provide them with a new target.

Virtually everything that happens in NYC or SF because they are "national assets" can take place in Omaha or Cleveland. Prudence therefore suggests that those cities make plans to move there in order to avoid man made or natural disasters. The sooner the better.

Good grief.

If you wish to abandon a major American city that got hit by an one in a 125 year event, be ready to do the same for all cities which suffer terrorism or natural disasters. And vote for cold hearted pols who will advocate such a crazy position, not that I am the least bit fearful that they would be elected.

And perhaps most importantly, hope and pray it doesn't ever happen to you so that you would not be forced to listen to such garbage from me and others in my position.
