The bus drivers have evacuated... hell, most people wouldn't wait to drive their bus to the last minute without knowing they could get out in time. Suppose he sends 10,000 people to the corner of Bourbon and Canal, and the buses don't show (which they didn't where they were supposed to)? Now what? They are exposed to the storm, with no way to get to shelters. No, you send them to the shelters, assuming that the experts, FEMA, are poised and ready, not asleep. But they were busy in Washington exchanging memos. The "cavalry" never arrived. Makes you sick the inept leadership we elected. DR keeps talking about the evacuation likes it rocket science........that the mayor missed all kinds of nuances. In fact, the evacuation is the easy, relatively straight forward part if you ignore the fact that many people don't want to go. The more complicated part is the relief effort after the disaster has hit. That's the part that's left to the feds who are unaffected by the disaster and presumably have the expertise to do the job correctly. That's why the feds are getting so much negative attention for their poor recovery effort. The expertise wasn't there......and addition, there has been considerable fumbling. Unfortunately, the people in charge of FEMA reflect who Bush is. As for Nagin, I can't say that affability is his strong suit and I definitely think he's playing Bush against Blanco to get as many goodies as he can, but I also think the guy is fairly bright, knows what he's doing and is committed to turning NO around. He realizes with Katrina, even as horrific as it was, that NO has struck gold and he's going to get as much of that gold for his city as possible. You can't ask anything more from a mayor. ted
