Well, I am sorry I was snippy. I will blame the market, which chewed me up today, and hurricanes, which are about to chew up my state. Our friends are leaving Houston early in the morning to stay with us through Rita. It's really pretty scary down there. I think it was Karen who talked once about how we speak in code to our own groups and sometimes forget that not everyone knows the language we're using. The idea fascinated me as I thought about the common vocabularies of work, home, love, politics, religion. Even people who share a lot of "code" can get crossways over words, so try to imagine completely different cultures trying to understand concepts without a background. No wonder we have trouble with our diplomatic efforts!
