Canada and Finland would be 2 prime examples of net exporters. The redistribution of wealth back to the raw material economies is not a bad thing per se. However, it cannot be a trend that lasts forever.

Market innovation finally has a chance to effect our fuel efficiency. Ford announced they will increase their hybrid cars 10 fold by 2010. Delphi and other component suppliers will have to figure out how to keep up with the new demand for equipment. However, electric engines in cars can certainly double or triple the amount of fuel.

If the world does nothing to make fuel efficiency more relevant, there is no way the environment can survive another 1 billion cars in China and India with existing fuel requirements. Hybrids and fuel cell engines will have to compete for a larger % of the market - not to mention diesel engines.

In any other market, car companies would figure out how to make the transition a positive event. The requirements for new technology gives them a chance to charge more for the new vehicles, and all the car companies are complaining. I hope to hell that MQ is right about the peak in energy prices right now. If the market does begin to realize there is a silver lining to the current supply imbalance for energy, then surely the market will be flooded with cleaner, more fuel efficient technologies than gasoline engines.

This will be a huge improvement for the environment. Looking at all of the hurricanes in the gulf, one can only wonder if the global warming can be reduced through these cleaner technologies. If they work, it will be another example of market innovation making the important changes for this country and the rest of the world.
