>>September 24, 2005 -- Anti-war protest in Washington, DC today. Very few Democratic members of Congress to appear. Reason: The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), according to Democratic insiders on Capitol Hill, put out the word that any member of Congress who appeared at the protest, where some speakers were to represent pro-Palestinian views, would face the political wrath of AIPAC. According to Democratic sources on the Hill, Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts was the chief conveyor of the AIPAC warning to his colleagues. At the time of this report, three members of Congress were to address the anti-war protestors: Reps. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), John Conyers (D-MI), and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA). The word is that AIPAC will direct its massive campaign support to Woolsey's neo-con and pro-Iraq war primary challenger, California State Assemblyman Joe Nation, who has strong connections to the Rand Corporation, one of the Pentagon's chief war-making think tanks. <<

Re: The Democrats and the Republicans are, indeed, both controlled/coerced/influenced by the same "master". Right-left separation, certainly in the US, is a myth. In fact, one can view the present leadership of the Democrats as mere Judas goats who mute any "leftist" or popular voice of the body of the party and who make sure that bipartisanship, ie submission to the will of the "master", is more important than opposition.

It's also important, however, to stress the fact that the "Israeli master" is not acting like some spellbinder who pulls the strings of the American puppet from a purely, exclusively, alien locus.... Most of the US's blind support to Israel stems from the religious brainwashing/conditioning of the American people. Somehow, that's a key difference between Europe and the US: Europeans view the whole Mideast mess as a geopolitical clash between Israeli/Jewish and Palestinian/Arab nationalisms, as a political tug-of-love over the area's material resources (ie space, water, access to the sea, demographics, etc), whereas Americans view it as a Biblical opera, a clash between God's chosen people and Satan's stooges.... That's why, as I once pointed out, European Zionism is basically a Jewish trip. You won't find many non-Jewish Europeans fanatically supporting Israel. Contrariwise, the US's biggest fan club of Israel is the evangelical crowd. The tens of millions of evangelical freaks who long for Greater Israel and the taming of its Muslim foes don't do it out of awe of the Israeli government --they do it out of obedience to God's will....

Xymphora has a slightly different opinion.

>>The dirty secret of American politics is that most Americans, including those who like to think of themselves as progressive or leftist or liberal, actually like the policies of the Republican Party. They will swear up and down that it is not true, but you can see it with your own eyes. They like using American power to murder a few rag-heads to save a few dollars on filling the tank of their SUVs (even if the attack on Iraq has actually resulted in an increase in the cost of gas!). They fear reduction in their property values if the American Empire, fueled by control of cheap energy, starts to crumble. They enjoy paying less taxes, and don't mind the injustices of the accompanying reduction in social welfare (they secretly resent their hard-earned money going to 'welfare queens'). They still fear Willie Horton, even if they can't quite remember who he is (the traditional Republican pandering to racism now takes the form of the 'war on terror', another secret love of liberals). Crooked computer voting machines allow them to maintain their political illusions of being progressive. They can continue to vote Democrat or even Green, happy in the knowledge that some Diebold technician is working diligently to ensure that the Republicans are reelected regardless of how the votes are cast. You can be a racist, selfish, stupid, war-mongering pig, just like the red-neck crackers that you so despise, and still maintain the illusion that your politics is as pure as the driven snow. The Right likes a corrupt voting system because it keeps the Republicans in power; the Left likes a corrupt voting system because it allows them to feel good about themselves and their virtuous voting, while ensuring that such virtuous voting doesn't put a stop to the worst of the Republican policies. The reason Americans use crooked computer voting machines is that everybody likes them. And that's why the Democrats are so dumb.<<
