Could be. Over half the population of Iraq will have had more far more rights under SH than under the new government.

You're confusing rights on the books (and not enforced) with actual rights. No one could have sued Uday for sexual harassment and won (under Saddam). And Shias (~60% of the population) were denied their historical religious rituals under Saddam. I'm not saying the new Iraq will be a lot different immediately, but it (hopefully) could become different in 1-60 years with a constitution.

It's Iran redux.

You're exaggerating up the Yazoo here. In Iran, the mullahs override any reform effort before it starts, and the power to do so is institutionalized in the basic Iranian law, so the reform effort is essentially nil. I don't know the specifics of the new Iraqi constitution, but I doubt the Iraqi mullahs have a veto over legislation they deem "unislamic". It's a big difference.

Welcome back, did you have a good time?

Shanghai was excellent. A great buzz in that city. China doesn't seem at all poor based on my week in Shanghai and Suzhou, but I guess demographics say it still is. Many Shanghai restaurant and nightclubs serving $6 beers and $30 meals were full of Chinese people. You don't see the low wage earner where I live in those types of places ever, and I think the low wage earners here earn ~$300 per month (plus food and housing), which is aboout the same as Shanghai salaries (on average).

As for 4 days spent with my 70 year old mother and step dad on their 40 person (all ages 65-80) 23 day bus tour of China, well, it was nice to see my mother.....

Go check out your Manifesto thread, I've posted an idea over there that sounds intriguing (to me!).

The only question is how far the Mullahs want to take it towards fundamentalism... you remember, the stuff that breeds anti-american terrorism.

Iraq is now a province of Iran, and will be governed by the Shia rulers. Iran has not been much of a terrorist threat.

The anti-american terrorists, you remember, are Sunni fundamentalists from Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Pakistan.
