Credit where it's due neolib, even if the USA only got rid of the evil occupier, enabling democracy, capitalism and habeas corpus ideas, that's as good as actually occupying and forcing the process. So I insist on including South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan etc as USA 'good works'. Germany and Japan weren't just militaristic before WWII, they were genocidal. The USA is the most militaristic place on the planet with more military power that the rest combined [excluding population-based insurrection - China and India would be ahead in that regard]. But there is a qualitative difference. There have just been convictions for American prison officers being nasty to Iraqi prisoners, who were no doubt obnoxious thugs who needed to be shown who was boss, so even the nastiness was understandable given the circumstances. The USA is militaristic. Sure, that's worrying, especially if economic circumstances and conflicts deteriorate. I would much prefer the USA to use their current superpower supereconomy status to ream out the UN and reconstitute it to something suitable for the world in the 21st century, for life in the global village or urbanized interdependent cheek by jowl life with commons needing protection and allocation, such as spectrum and oceans. But there is a world of difference between Adolf's Final Solution and Abu Grahib and Guantanamo Bay. Also between Japan's occupation of Nanking and USA occupation of Baghdad. Though of course there are no doubt some instances not coming to light of wanton cruelty and murder by American soldiers. Just as in My Lai, where American troops were every bit as bad as the worst of the worst of Adolf's and Hirohito's troops. Not all of them, and some disclosed the murder, which wasn't strictly acceptable to the USA political system. Let's not be naive. The Koran and Islamic Jihad [which is a LOT of Moslems] have an avowed and declared aim of destroying infidels, apostates, taking their property and bringing Allah's rule and dhimmitude to everywhere. A military defence is the only way of stopping people bent on megalomania. A militaristic USA is able to keep them at bay. Unfortunately, they are flooding into Europe and here, and if Moslems believe as they say they do, we can expect "Rivers of blood" as per Enoch Powell decades ago. Which London recently experienced on bus and tube. Nederlands has had a Van Gogh shot, knifed and killed in the street, with an Islamic Jihad message stuck to his body with a knife. That's the plan for all of us. I am perfectly happy to have a militaristic USA taking care of Islamic Jihad. There are a billion Moslems, which means a LOT of Islamic Jihad and head-hacking is intended. Not to mention nuclear suicide-bombing if they get a chance. Mqurice
