This is a difficult business
Pay Dirt!

I attended the world premier showing of "Pay Dirt: The Alberta Oil Sands" at the "Big Energy Gala" last night.

Director: Matt Palmer
Producer: Margot McMaster, Matt Palmer, Carolyn McMaster
Screenwriter: Fred Stenson
Cinematographer: Doug Munro
Editor: Margot McMaster
Cast: Narrator: Arthur Kent

Matt Palmer, director was present and took Q&A. I want to thank the good folks at ECA who invited me and the ticket.

Packed the Jack Singer theatre. 1,200 people were captivated the whole time. Beautiful cinematography and sound.

Pay Dirt is a 2 part, 1hr each, made for TV documentary. The first part dealt with the Oilsands history. The second part is current day, up to Katrina, discussing environmental, social, political, technology advances and economics of oil sands. What it takes to get one of these engineering mammoths off the ground. The political or economic driven bust and booms. World situation, Kyoto, demand from US, and Asia, etc. Energy usage and wastage by North American consumers. (I found this blame containing both some truth and unfair. Our poorly designed municiple road systems, at least in Calgary, are to blame too, etc. Anyways another totally big subject). Much information. Very clear and very well written. Great interviews.

I 'saw' more in these two hours than days visiting Ft McMoney.

The crowd, like I said, were captivated, silent and fixated, yet the emotions were released on segments on NEP and Trudeau (boos of course), the Americans (cheers for being the client and partner, but boos for their protectionism and trade practices).

I found interesting that along the way, each technological improvement failed before it was perfected.

Look for it if you can when it hits the tube. Two thumbs up. A definite must see!!
