Many blacks don't know anyone who has much of an education beyond high school, so it is hard to see the value of education. But without an education, it is hard to break out of the cycle of poverty.

I never denied this point, but tell me why blacks continue to find themselves worse off economically and in high-density, high-crime areas. Hmmmmm......you're a black kid. No one in your family has ever graduated from high school except one and he's in the state pen. Your parents have worked hard all their lives and have nothing to show for it. You see your friends in gangs and they have new clothes and new cars. None of them have graduated high school. So you quit too....looking for immediate gratification......like many teens. When you finally figure out that the whole lifestyle stinks, its too late. You've already killed and stolen. In the 1990s, the LA gangs realized there was a fortune to made in drugs. First, they organized the drug selling culture in LA.......that's usually what gang fights are about these days. Then they went corporate and set up branches of their operations in Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, Boise etc. And from what I understand, they've gone national now. They are making money hand over fist and its an incredible lure for poor black teens. Severe damage was done to the black race in this country through years of slavery and discrimination. It will take many more years for the bulk of that population to come out of it. That's why affirmative action is so important. Its not as important for Asians or even for Latinos but because of racial politics, it must be applied to all minorities in this country. However, the primary need for AA is the black population. As a white man, I don't like paying for the sins of our fathers but there is really no choice if blacks are to recover as a people. One can say that that's BS; that I am a traitor to my race; that I am racist. But in truth, I am a pragmatist. IMO this country will not have racial harmony until all races are in relative equilabrium with each other. At the present time, we have a ways to go before reaching that goal. ted
