I learned some valuable driving lessons when I lived in Boston (briefly). A buddy of mine explained, "listen, just get up to the speed of traffic and merge, don't look over your shoulder or use your blinkers, that's a sign of weakness. Don't worry, if they see that you aren't looking over your shoulder, they know that they have to make room for you"

of course, I paraphrased.....

My other pet peeve is people who are merging who seem to think they have the right of way. They expect the traffic in the right travel lane of the freeway to slow down so they can get in rather than the merger either speeding up to pop in front, or slowing down to slide in beind.
