You misquoted Kerry. He never said "attack Iraq" nor did he vote to attack Iraq. He made it clear when he voted what his aim was. Voting for war powers were meant to force Saddam to disarm, using real leverage with teeth, troops on Saddam's border, etc. The key to this debate was Kerry's insistence that as "invade only as a last resort and then only when we are fuly prepared". That was Kerry's position and it was the right one. Bush rushed in unprepared after a token showing at the UN. Kerry was against that. But he also knew he couldn't stop it. Nor did he want to be the anti-war candidate, especially protecting a creep like Saddam in the process.

Admittedly though, Kerry was and is trying to show he's no pacifist liberal. Remember, he has a record of being a dove, even voted against the Gulf War, which turned out to be a mistake. By heartland standards that made him "too liberal" on defence. Kerry also does not appease tyrants or terrorists. However, he also does not invade countries unless absolutely necessary and very well prepared.

Dont buy into the myth that Kerry was "for the war" or that he flip-flopped. In fact, his stance turned out to be the correct one. Ignoring the threat of Saddam was not the right move either remember. At some point Saddam had to be dealt with. Just not with a poorly planned unilateral occupation based on BS evidence.
